Believing that the wonders of the universe outspill every category into which we try to fit them and that the ultimate meaning of our lives can never be permanently reduced to a brief written statement, Unitarian Universalists choose not to organize our church around a creed.

We have a set of purposes and principles and a mission statement, but there are no beliefs which serve as a test of membership in our church.

The mission of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco is to be a sanctuary for individual religious growth and learning, to celebrate life and worship in diverse fellowship, to bear witness to suffering and joy, and to work for peace and justice in our world.

The Faith Exploration Program of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco offers programming for all ages, to enrich lives intellectually, spiritually, and practically.

Who We Are

Adult Faith Exploration Committee
Jim Barnett (Chair)
Nancy Buffum
Kiam Cua
Alison Rittger
Chris Garrett

Where We Are
First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco map it!
1187 Franklin Street (at Geary)
San Francisco, CA 94109

(415) 776-4580
Email UUSF
www.uusf.org

Links
Course Catalog
Course Calendar
Registration Form

New UU: Sharing the Journey

Description: New to Unitarian Universalism? Marcia is just getting to know author Rick Fields when he is diagnosed with lung cancer. Although he warns her off, she refuses to leave him. They struggle through their new relationship while one of them readies to die. Both Christine’s mother and stepfather are dying, but she can only care for one of them. It’s a delicate balance of life, death and love. In one long, exhausting night, Frank Ostaseski, founder of Zen Hospice, learns he is more than just “Mr. Hospice.” Better than a primer for success, the film is a recipe for forgiveness.

Facing Death . . . with open eyes takes a provoking look at living with dying. Author and Buddhist, Rick Fields, faces the real meaning of spiritual practice while dying of lung cancer. What is the meaning of life? What happens to me when I die? How do I find truth? Who am I? If you would like to tackle these question with others who are interested in exploring issues of ultimacy, this class is for you. Rev. Stewart is FUUSF’s Senior Minister and is a particularly engaging classroom teacher.

The central purpose of this class is to create a community context in which individuals create their own credos (statements of belief). Each session includes a written assignment which, if completed, will result in a full-blown credo. The credos may be presented to class participants and to the congregation in a larger context. The four topics for exploration are Search, Love, Faith, and Prayer. Classes are interactive, experiential, and reflective in nature and utilize multimedia presentations.

Each week you will receive a workbook to assist you in the writing of your credo. It is suggested that you read the materials in their entirety to get the most out of this class. Participants are to write about what they believe about each of the topics covered. In the past some participants have compiled scrap books, written music or poetry, used clay, etc., to express their beliefs in lieu of writing. This is certainly acceptable, and even encouraged. Reflection is the key.

Course Leader: UUSF's Senior Minister Greg Stewart is excited to teach this class again. You are encouraged to contact Greg for assistance, in the event of an unforeseen absence, or for additional course-related resources. Church office: 415-776-4580 x122.

Schedule: April 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 7-9pm (Wednesdays). Course Calendar

Fee: All participants pay a materials fee of $25. Fee waivers are available in cases of financial hardship. Speak to the instructor confidentially about your own situation. This fee should be paid prior to the beginning of the first class.

Registration: Since this class is usually very popular, pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Unitarian Universalism has spoken out in favor of drug policy reform several times in its history, usually for reasons of social justice. This coming November, there will be a ballot initiative to legalize and tax cannabis for personal use in California. The reasons for its introduction are primarily rooted in justice, personal freedom, and economic priorities.

This course will consider a broader framework, including spiritual priorities. It begins with a consideration of the moral underpinnings of arguments both for and against "drug" use. It will examine historical and potential contexts for using entheogens for developing different states of awareness and grounding to the Earth. It will delve into popular attitudes—both spoken and unspoken—about drug use. It will conclude with a study of ways in which the war on drugs intersects with the ongoing race war and the failed prison paradigm, along with envisioning and implementing a restorative system of justice in-line with UU values.

Dates: Tuesday evenings March 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 7-9pm.

March 9: Morality and the UU Stance
March 16: History of Spirituality and Entheogens
March 23: Understanding Frameworks and Attitudes
March 30: Envisioning Justice for the Future

Course Fee: $20 for the series, or save $5 by preregistering/prepaying.
Scholarships are available. Amy was for a number of years a faculty member at UCSF, specializing in Neuroscience. After leaving that position, she has devoted increasing time to her hobby of UU history, using her teaching and research skills in this new endeavor. This particular course she has taught a number of times in the past ten years. It is offered here again, as a beginning course in Unitarianism and Universalism, for newer members and curious veterans alike.

Fee: $15 or $5/class.
